About 96% of Americans experience tooth decay by age 65, reports a study by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and that’s exactly what a dental cleaning visit to Sabeti Cosmetic Dentistry does.
You might be diligent when it comes to your oral hygiene at home, but even the most meticulous brusher may sometimes forget to floss or rinse their mouth properly. Even the tiniest bit of food debris in your mouth or just a trace of sugar can result in plaque and tartar, and eventually lead to tooth decay.
Tartar or calculus is quite stubborn and cannot be easily eliminated by brushing at home. Moreover, it can develop deep between and behind your teeth and beneath your gumline — places you cannot easily see.
That’s why we recommend routine professional cleaning at Sabeti Cosmetic Dentistry.
What to Expect During Your Cleaning Appointment
Usually, dental cleaning is done during your six-monthly dental checkup appointments. The procedure involves several steps, including a review of your medical history, and an oral examination. If Dr. Shohreh Sabeti detect any traces of plaque or calculus in your mouth, you will be subjected to a thorough cleaning.
Removal of Calculus
Using a small mirror, we will be able to see if you have tartar hidden in your mouth. We may first use an ultrasonic device that emits vibrations to shake loose the bigger pieces of tartar. Then, we will use a fine instrument called a scaler to scrape off the stubborn calculus residue from deep between your teeth and beneath your gum line. The more tartar there is, the more time we will need to scrape it off.
Once your teeth are free of tartar, we will use a high-powered electrical brush to scrub them. We may use flavored toothpaste with a gritty texture so that you may hear a grinding noise during the brushing. This noise is due to the tiny granules in the toothpaste that effectively deep clean your teeth, and buff them to a high shine.
Although you may think that this procedure is pointless because you already floss at home, professional flossing goes deeper and is more immaculate than what you can do. At Sabeti Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Shohreh Sabeti will thoroughly examine your teeth and gum line to take out any remaining plaque or debris from the tooth cleaning procedure. It also helps them locate any spots in your gums where you bleed from.
Fluoride is a powerful protectant that can make your teeth stronger and make them less susceptible to cavities. We may ask you to choose the type of flavor you like best, and place a similarly-flavored fluoride gel or paste on your teeth with the help of a mouth tray. The solution is allowed to stay there for a minute. We may also apply a fluoride varnish to your teeth that hardens when it comes in contact with saliva.
