Same Day Crowns

Dental assistant assisting with Same Day Crowns technologyOne of the reasons why many people are reluctant to have their teeth restored through crowns is that traditional crown treatment requires multiple visits to the dentist. At Sabeti Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer you crowns that can be created and cemented to your tooth on the same day.

We have in house technology that can be used to create same-day or chairside crowns made of high-grade porcelain.

Thanks to this technology, along with CAD/CAM software, these crowns are trending these days as they allow you to walk out of our office with a fully restored smile in just a couple of hours.

How Are Same Day Crowns Made and Placed?

At Sabeti Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Shohreh Sabeti will first administer local anesthesia to prevent any discomfort during the procedure. Then, they will prepare your tooth for crown placement.

Once the tooth is prepared, they will use an intraoral camera to take 3D digital impressions of your teeth and mouth. This is different from a traditional crown-making procedure as that typically involves using a putty-like material to create molds of your tooth.

The intraoral camera sends the digital images directly to a computer with CAD/CAM software that is connected to a milling machine. We will closely check the digital impressions, and make any necessary changes to guarantee precision. The adjusted image is then sent to the milling machine which will fabricate a crown from a single block of high-grade porcelain.

We will then use a resin material to adhere the crown to your tooth.

Benefits of Same Day Crowns

Same day crowns have a lot of benefits over traditional crowns:
•  Restoring the Function of the Tooth Immediately: The best thing about a same day crown is that it allows you to bite and chew properly again without any downtime. When you are undergoing a traditional crown placement, you first usually have to wear a temporary filling or crown while you are waiting for your permanent crown to be manufactured. During this time, you have to be very careful with the type of food you eat so that the temporary crown does not crack or fall off. Same day crowns eliminate the need for this step.
•  Prevent Injury/ Infection: Temporary crowns used during a regular crown procedure are weak and can break or come loose if you eat hard or sticky food. This can further damage the tooth and allow bacteria to re-infect the tooth. This is not a cause of concern with same day crowns.
•  Saves Money: Temporary crowns and an additional dental visit mean you will have to pay more money to get your tooth restored. Since same day crowns are created and placed in the same sitting, it eliminates these added expenses.

Limitations of Same Day Crowns

Same day crowns also have a few limitations:
•  Metal-Based Crowns are Stronger: Same day crowns can only be made of high-quality porcelain; however, it is still weaker than metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. As such, metal-based crowns last much longer than porcelain same day crowns.
•  A Traditional Crown May Fit Better: An intraoral camera that is used to take digital impressions of your tooth may not be able to detect fractures beneath the gumline. As such, a physical impression and traditional crown may work better in this case.

If you take good care of them, a same day crown can last you for over 15 years. If you are interested in getting a same day crown to restore your tooth, contact us today at (213) 314-0636 to schedule an appointment.
